Patients come to Arizona Aesthetic Associates for “panniculectomy”, or body contouring to remove hanging fat and skin after dramatic weight loss.

Our board-certified plastic surgeons pride themselves in delivering the best panniculectomy in Scottsdale, Phoenix and Gilbert areas.

This procedure is a common need for patients who have undergone bariatric surgery or lost a great deal of weight naturally. Often, the excess skin and tissue appears to be an apron of skin that hangs over the abdomen and pubic area.

Excess Tissue on the Lower Abdomen

The joy of finally being free of the excess weight is sometimes reduced by the presence of hanging, loose skin and tissue on the lower abdomen and pubic area. Most patients feel compelled to dress in loose clothing to hide the problem, and many are embarrassed to reveal the body in intimate situations. Our advanced body contouring procedures can give you a smooth, trim, attractive appearance that you can reveal at the beach or pool or in tight clothing – with complete confidence.

A panniculectomy is not a tummy tuck; this procedure has the goal of removing the hanging apron of skin drooping over the abdomen and pubic area and does not involve rejuvenation of the belly button or tightening the abdominal muscles as occurs in a tummy tuck. Whether you were left with this “apron” of skin and tissue after pregnancy, a prior surgery, due to weight loss, or due to age, at Arizona Aesthetic Associates, our board-certified plastic surgeons can help.

Candidates for a Panniculectomy

Good candidates for this surgical procedure are those who have hanging skin and tissue on the lower abdomen and pubic area.

Some health considerations include:

  • Are healthy enough to undergo general anesthesia
  • Do not have any significant medication use issues that may inhibit

Panniculectomy: The Procedure

This procedure is typically performed under general anesthesia.

The length of the surgery will vary, based upon the level of correction needed, and whether you are having other procedures in the same surgical appointment (tummy tuck, hernia repair, or other).

Two incisions are placed on your lower abdomen, and the excess skin and tissue removed. The remaining skin is then tightened and sutured together.

Recovery Time

A panniculectomy is a major surgery, and the recovery requires time – and patience. The results are well worth going through the necessary healing – your abdomen will appear flatter and smoother, free from the unsightly excess skin and tissue that hangs below the pubic area. It may require several months for you to recover completely, although most patients return to work in one to two weeks. It is common to experience some swelling and bruising after the surgery. You will be prescribed pain medication to get you through the early stages of discomfort.

There will be some restriction in the types of motions you can make, with no lifting or exercise for several weeks.

Meet with Our Plastic Surgeon

To make a decision about this important surgery, we urge you to meet with us at our private plastic surgery clinic in Scottsdale, or at our Phoenix or Gilbert locations. We can evaluate your condition and advise you about how the problem will be addressed surgically. Some patients with good skin elasticity may achieve results with liposuction alone, while others will need panniculectomy surgery.

At Arizona Aesthetic Associates, we perform a wide range of plastic surgery procedures, both cosmetic and reconstructive. If you are troubled by an apron of skin on the lower abdomen, there are solutions that can bring you relief.
