Gynecomastia is the technical term for enlarged male breasts. With increased awareness of this condition among men, male breast reduction surgery is becoming increasingly popular.

Our highly-trained plastic surgeons at Arizona Aesthetic Associates Plastic Surgery serve the Phoenix, Scottsdale, and Gilbert AZ areas, and perform state-of-the-art gynecomastia procedures.

What Causes Gynecomastia and What Are the Symptoms?

Enlarged male breasts is a condition with several possible causes.

They include:

  • Natural hormonal changes: In infants (because of the mother’s estrogen), during puberty, and in men ages 50 to 69 (when testosterone levels decrease significantly)
  • Drugs and medications: Including anti-anxiety meds, tricyclic antidepressants, antibiotics, anti-androgens used to treat prostate conditions, ulcer medications, heart medications, anabolic steroids and androgens, alcohol, and street drugs, such as marijuana, heroin, methadone, and amphetamines.
  • Health conditions: This includes conditions that interfere with normal testosterone production, thyroid issues, certain tumors, aging, kidney failure, liver failure, and cirrhosis of the liver are some examples.

Gynecomastia is characterized by excess glandular tissue, excess localized fat, and/or excess breast skin in some cases. In severe cases of gynecomastia, the weight of enlarged male breasts can cause the breasts to sag, stretching and enlarging the areola.

Why Have Gynecomastia Surgery?

Gynecomastia is commonly called “man boobs.” This potentially embarrassing condition can reduce self-confidence, driving men to wear multiple layers of clothing to hide their enlarged chest. Some men with gynecomastia are embarrassed to change in a locker room and will not go to the beach or pool without a shirt.

The goal of gynecomastia surgery is to restore a normal masculine appearance to the chest. Using advanced techniques, our plastic surgeons produce exceptional results in gynecomastia surgery with minimal visible scarring.

How Is Gynecomastia Surgery Performed?

The type of gynecomastia surgery performed depends on the type of chest tissue present and the amount of excess skin, if any. Without excess skin and with fat being the predominant soft tissue, liposuction alone can be performed.

Thick, glandular tissue will require direct removal which is done by making a small incision at the border of the areola. If there excess loose skin, the skin will have to be removed and tightened. The incision is closed with small internal dissolvable sutures so that the incision is not readily noticeable afterwards.

What Is Recovery Like after Gynecomastia Surgery?

It can take two to six weeks to fully recover from gynecomastia surgery. You will need to wear a compression garment for three to six weeks to reduce post-operative fluid formation and swelling.
