At Arizona Aesthetic Associates, our team of board-certified plastic surgeons performs advanced techniques for hernia repair in Scottsdale, including hernia repair revision and mesh removal.

If you have developed a hernia, the earlier it is treated the better, as the hernia, when left untreated, can grow.

Our surgeons proudly deliver the finest abdominal hernia repair Scottsdale and Phoenix have to offer.

Modern Surgical Techniques for Hernia Repair

The traditional approach to hernia repair in Scottsdale involves placing a synthetic mesh as an overlay or plug for the hernia. Although this can alleviate the symptoms of the hernia, the muscles and tissues are not really repaired with stitches to pull them together. While this was a workable technique, the patient is left with the tissue separation.

Newer techniques have been developed, including:

No-Tension, no-mesh repair: Depending on the location of the hernia, the tissues that are involved in the hernia can be repaired directly or can be used to strengthen the hernia site. No mesh is used and the hernia is repaired without tension or minimal tension. At our location in Phoenix, no-mesh hernia repair surgeries are expertly performed by our team of board-certified plastic surgeons.

Acellular dermal matrix hernia repair: In circumstances where the tissue around the hernia is weak or missing, using dermal matrix to span or support the hernia repair is a great option. Acellular dermal matrix is a non-synthetic material that allows the body to grow into it.

The Surgery: What to Expect

Most hernia repairs in Phoenix are performed with the patient under general anesthesia. You may need to have some tests before surgery depending on your age and health, including EKG and a chest X-ray to ensure you are safe to undergo surgery. If you are currently on medications, these will be reviewed, and some alterations in your medication schedule may be needed.

Blood-thinning medications (or supplements) should not be taken prior to Scottsdale hernia repair surgery, as these can increase the risk of excess bleeding and bruising. All the details will be worked out with your other doctors. Patient health and safety are always a primary concern at Arizona Aesthetic Associates in Scottsdale. As the surgery is performed while you are under anesthesia, you will not feel any discomfort. When you wake up, your hernia will be resolved, and you can return home. You will need to be driven home by a friend or family member (adult).

Recovery from Hernia Repair

During your appointment for your ventral hernia repair in Scottsdale, you will be provided with full aftercare instructions and will have follow-up appointments with us. You will have pain medication to keep your comfortable if you need it.

You will need a few days to rest after your surgery. The recovery from the procedure is not long, although you may feel more tired than usual – your body is using its energy to heal.

Types of Hernias

There are various types of hernias, including:

Inguinal Hernia: When a section of the intestine protrudes through the abdominal wall near the inguinal area, this is termed an “inguinal hernia,” and is the most common, particularly for men who have an inherent weakness in the lower abdominal muscle structure.

Incisional Hernia: These hernias occur at the incision site of an earlier abdominal surgery. Elderly patients, or overweight patients are more likely to suffer an incisional hernia.

Femoral Hernia: This type of hernia is most common in women who are either pregnant or obese. The condition occurs when the intestine enters the canal through which the femoral artery transmits blood to the rest of the leg.

How Hernias Occur: Causes

A hernia occurs due to pressure on the muscle or fascia (the thin fibrous tissue surrounding the muscles and organs), and a weakness in some aspect of the muscle structure of the body. The organ or tissue is pushed through the weakened area, causing a bulging area, called a hernia.

Hernias can occur due to various types of physical stress, including:

  • Lifting heavy objects
  • Increased intra-abdominal pressure
  • Obesity
  • Pregnancy
  • Genetic/developmental weakness of muscle
  • Past surgery
