Surviving breast cancer is a difficult journey – and beating the disease is a true cause for celebration. Once your treatment has concluded or in conjunction with your breast cancer treatment, it is possible to undergo breast reconstruction in Scottsdale.

At Arizona Aesthetic Associates, our team of board-certified plastic surgeons is dedicated to helping women restore breasts lost to mastectomy or restore symmetry after a lumpectomy or other breast disease.

Mastectomy Reconstruction Surgery Phoenix

What is Breast Reconstruction?

The loss of one or both breasts through mastectomy may be required to treat the breast cancer patient. This loss is often both physical and emotional – the breasts, to some degree, are a defining feature of a feminine body. It is often a significant aspect of healing, both emotional and physical, to have breast cancer reconstruction in Scottsdale and restore natural-looking, feminine breasts.

Here at Arizona Aesthetic Associates in Scottsdale, breast reconstruction surgeries are expertly delivered with stunning results.

Whether it is one breast or both that need to be reconstructed, our doctors will make sure that both breasts are as symmetrical as possible and the results will make you feel whole again.

Each woman is different, and the breast reconstruction procedure needed will vary. While some women may have breast reconstruction at the same time as the mastectomy, others will need or want to wait some time before the reconstruction can occur (delayed reconstruction). In either case, we work closely with our patients, and their breast cancer doctors, to guide them through the final chapter of recovery from breast cancer.

Breast Reconstruction: The Options

Several techniques are employed in custom breast reconstruction. Each woman who seeks this treatment should have an in-depth discussion with us at our Phoenix, Scottsdale, or Gilbert clinics before undergoing a mastectomy. An “immediate reconstruction” may be possible – your breast will be restored immediately after the mastectomy.

Your Scottsdale and Phoenix breast reconstruction options may include:

Tissue Expander Breast Reconstruction: For some women, it will be necessary to implant a tissue expander to help the body produce more skin cells, so an implant can be comfortably placed. The tissue expander will be, over several weeks, slowly filled with saline solution. It will then be replaced with an implant when the final breast skin envelope is stretched. After the implant surgery has healed, we can perform nipple reconstruction, including areola tattooing to create a natural color for the nipple and areola. Additional treatments such as fat transfer can also be performed to thicken the tissue over the implant.

Flap Breast Reconstruction: We perform several flap breast reconstruction techniques including LAT flap using the back muscle, TRAM flap using the abdominal muscle, or DIEP flap using the skin and fat from the abdomen. Breast reconstruction using a flap may be used when patients cannot or do not want to have an implant based reconstruction. Tissue from another area of your body with sufficient volume will be harvested, along with the arteries and veins supplying nutrients to that tissue, and moved to create a new breast from your own natural tissue. As it is actual tissue, this method produces the most natural feel of any type of breast reconstruction technique. We are well known for our expert diep breast reconstruction in Scottsdale and surrounding areas.

Immediate Breast Reconstruction: The breast removed in a mastectomy will be replaced with an implant or flap once the mastectomy is complete during the same surgical time. When you awaken from surgery, your new breast will already be in place. Once you have fully healed from surgery, nipple and areola reconstruction (including natural coloring) can be performed.

I was referred to Dr. Andres for breast reconstruction as part of my journey through breast cancer. He and his staff made a very difficult time in my life so much easier with their compassion and skillfulness. Most importantly, I came through looking like me and am completely happy with the results. I couldn't have asked for anything more.

FAQ

Am I a Candidate for Breast Reconstruction in Scottsdale?

Cancer patients who have had a single, or double mastectomy, or a lumpectomy that has disfigured the breast are appropriate candidates for breast reconstruction in Phoenix. Other candidates include those who were born with genetic deformities or have experienced physical trauma that has affected breast shape.

Will Insurance Cover my Breast Reconstruction?

Most insurance companies are required to cover breast reconstruction for any woman who has undergone a mastectomy or lumpectomy from breast cancer. Many insurance companies will also cover the surgery for issues that are congenital or trauma-related. Let our Scottsdale breast reconstruction specialists know your insurance provider’s name, and we will be happy to find out what your insurance will cover.

Does Breast Reconstruction Change The Risk Of My Cancer Returning? Does It Make Cancer Detection Harder?

Breast reconstruction does not pose a problem in detecting a recurrence of cancer, and neither increases or decreases the risk of a return of breast cancer. What the procedure does is restore natural-looking breasts, which can be a very important point in a full recovery.

How Long will Breast Reconstruction Take?

Each patient is different so the timeline will vary depending on how many surgeries are needed. Additional cancer treatments play a role in the overall timeline. In some cases, breast reconstruction will take from six months to a year to complete, while for other patients, it may be performed in the same surgery as the mastectomy.

Will my new breast match my natural breast?

For women who have had a single breast removed and are planning to have breast reconstruction surgery in Scottsdale, it is normal to have concerns about how the reconstructed breast will appear. In some cases, an adjustment may be needed in the remaining breast in some cases. The goal is to create a breast that is a perfect match in size, shape, and projection, and this can often be accomplished very successfully.

What is the longevity of an implant?

There is no specific “shelf life” for breast implants. Breast implant manufacturers provide a ten year warranty, but many modern breast implants last far longer. The rule of thumb is that if the implant is performing as it should, and there are no problems, there is no need to replace it. While they are not going to last a lifetime, it is not unusual for them to last longer than ten years. If you have older silicone implants, it is advised that you get an MRI every two years to ensure the implant has not ruptured.
